Green Event

Werner Kogler (Vice-Chancellor), City Councillor Eva Schobesberger, Tournament Director Sandra Reichel, Norbert Rainer (Managing Director of the Upper Austria Climate Alliance) and Stefan Kaineder (Provincial Councillor for the Environment and Climate) at the presentation of the certificate certifying the Upper Austria Ladies Linz as a "Green Event".
A beacon for sustainability

Sustainability is a top priority at Upper Austria Ladies Linz - after all, protecting the climate and our environment is everyone's business!

A brief look back: In 2023, the Upper Austria Ladies Linz became a certified green event. This makes the tournament not only the largest women's sporting event in Austria, but also the largest green sporting event in Austria. In addition, last year 3 prizes have been won: At Europe's largest sports business event, the SPOBIS Conference in Düsseldorf, the Upper Austria Ladies Linz was honoured with the silver medal for its commitment to sustainability. Austria's only WTA tournament received the highest honour in the sports category in the "sustainable winning" competition initiated by the Federal Ministry.

We took second place in the Sport & Climate Protection category at the VIKTOR, Austria's Sport Business Award.

And this year, the tournament is also initiating a wide range of activities. There will once again be a Green Court in the Public Area, where various partners can present themselves in the context of sustainability.

As in 2023, Oberösterreichische Versicherung is sending out a strong signal with a sustainability campaign. Oberösterreichische Versicherung will provide young beekeepers with a honeycomb for every ace that is hit during the week of the tournament.

This is what we do specifically for sustainability during the tournament:
  • Arrival: A warm welcome! Every visitor can use the Linz Linien public transport system free of charge when attending the event. There are also plenty of bicycle parking spaces directly in front of the Design Centre.
  • Drinking water: Thanks to a water bar from the LINZ AG visitors can refresh themselves with free water at the Green Court.
  • Stay informed: An information stand organised by Business Upper Austria together with the JKU on the topic of "Sustainable Plastics" will bring visitors up to date.
  • Upcycling competition:  As part of the tournament, we invite all interested school classes to take part in our upcycling competition presented by LINZ AG in. Would your class like to take part? You can find information on the conditions of participation at office@matchmaker.at. For the three winners, the LINZ AG vouchers for a class excursion.
  • Advertising materials: These are made from sustainable materials. In addition, only recycled paper is used for printed materials and signs are not laminated.
  • Hotel: Employees and players are accommodated in the neighbouring hotel and can walk to the Design Center. The Design Centre and the players' hotel are also already certified with the Austrian Ecolabel.
  • Rubbish: Waste is separated throughout the tournament. When procuring products, attention is paid to sustainable and waste-avoiding products.
  • Reusable: To avoid waste, we use reusable items everywhere. Both for crockery and drinks.
  • Upcycling: In exhibition stand construction, the floors used are upcycled after the tournament - with our partner Skanbo and the Skanbo Collection, among others.
  • Tennis balls: Tennis balls that have been played once are donated to tennis clubs.
