Linz, 11. 11. 2021 - Tournament director Sandra Reichel received shock news early on Thursday afternoon. A visibly contrite Simona Halep informed Reichel that she would not be able to play the semi-final match against her Romanian compatriot Jaqueline Cristian scheduled for 8 p.m. due to an acute knee injury.
The 30-year-old, who was seeded number two at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz 2021, said: "Unfortunately, I can't play in my semi-final because of a knee injury I picked up in my match on Wednesday. I would do anything to be able to play, but my left knee is swollen and sore and I would only aggravate it further. I would like to say a big thank you to the tournament and the fans of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz for a fantastic week. I hope to return."
Halep's forced withdrawal from the semi-finals turns her compatriot Jaqueline Cristian from "lucky loser" to "lucky winner". The 23-year-old, who had already failed to qualify, will therefore be able to enjoy a place in the final. It is already certain that the Romanian will play against an American. Either against Alison Riske or Danielle Collins. The duel between the two did not start until 6 p.m. on Thursday.
