Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic poses with the champions trophy after the final of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships Grand Slam tennis tournament

Wimbledon winner Vondrousova serves in Linz!

The reigning Wimbledon winner comes to Linz! Czech superstar Marketa Vondrousova leads the entry list of the 33rd Upper Austria Ladies Linz on. "I'm very proud that we can present the Wimbledon winner in Linz. Marketa has an incredibly attractive, variable style of play and is a super likeable, modest personality," says Tournament Director Sandra Reichel about the world number seven. "At our historic premiere as a WTA 500 tournament, we will have a very attractive field of participants that we can all look forward to," emphasises Reichel.

The Linz Women's Tennis Classic, which has received an upgrade from the women's professional tennis organisation WTA, will take place in the WTA 500 category for the first time from 28 January to 4 February. Tickets for the event at the Linz Design Centre are available via the Online ticket shop and at all Ö-Ticket advance booking offices!

Wimbledon triumph, French Open final and Olympic silver medal

Vondrousova sensationally became the first unseeded player of the professional era to triumph at Wimbledon in 2023. However, the left-hander with the gifted talent was by no means an unknown quantity on the tour. She won her first WTA title in Biel (Switzerland) in 2017 at the age of 17, and the former world junior number one reached the final of the French Open in 2019 at the age of 19. She won the silver medal at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, losing to Switzerland's Belinda Bencic in three sets in the final.

Vondrousova's list of successes would probably be much longer if the 24-year-old had not repeatedly suffered serious injuries. In 2022, she had to undergo her second operation on her left wrist and missed six months of the season; she watched Wimbledon 2022 in a cast as a spectator in London. She returned to Church Road a year later and completed her personal tennis fairytale with a 6:4, 6:4 victory over Tunisian Ons Jabeur in the final.

Czech players have already celebrated great successes in Linz

And now Vondrousova will serve in Linz, where Czech players traditionally feel very comfortable. "Czech women have celebrated many successes here in the past. It feels a bit like a home tournament for them here in our neighbouring country," says Sandra Reichel. Jana Novotna, who died far too young, won in 1995 and 1998, Petra Kvitova won in 2011, Karolina Pliskova took the title in 2014 and Barbora Strycova triumphed in 2017. "This time, Marketa Vondrousova is one of the hottest contenders for the title. We are looking forward to many fans from the Czech Republic travelling to our tournament again," says the tournament director.
