Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic poses with the champions trophy after the final of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships Grand Slam tennis tournament

A Wimbledon winner in Linz: Marketa Vondrousova does the honours

Tennis fans can look forward to a guest appearance by a Wimbledon winner. Marketa Vondrousova, who became the first unseeded player in tennis history to win the Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon in the summer of 2023, has signed up for the Upper Austria Ladies Linz, which will take place at the Linz Design Center from 26 January to 2 February 2025. For Vondrousova, Linz is an important fixture on her comeback tour.

Last year, the Czech had to end her season early after the Wimbledon tournament due to shoulder surgery. After intensive preparation, she now wants to attack again and return to one of her favourite tournaments.

In 2023, she already reached the semi-finals at the Design Centre. "It's not that far from my home in Prague. That's why my family is often here," says Vondrousova, who played the best year of her career to date two years ago with the momentum from Upper Austria and won the most traditional tennis tournament in the world with a victory over Ons Jabeur in the final at Wimbledon. This also catapulted her into the world's top 10. The left-hander subsequently reached the quarter-finals at the US Open and also competed in the WTA Finals. Two years earlier, Vondrousova surprisingly won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and only had to admit defeat to Belinda Bencic - she will now meet the Swiss again at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz 2025!

"We are delighted to welcome Olympic champion Belinda Bencic and Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova to Linz. Last year she had to cancel her participation due to injury. We are all the more pleased that she is now coming to us. I still remember her performance at the Design Centre two years ago and I'm sure that she will be able to build on that again," says tournament director Sandra Reichel. The 25-year-old could continue the tradition of successful Czech players in Linz. A Czech woman has already triumphed seven times at the women's tennis classic in Linz. The last time was Barbora Strycova in 2017. Eight years later, Marketa Vondrousova is now making another attempt.
