Angelique Kerber is returning to the Upper Austria Ladies Linz for the first time after winning the tournament eleven years ago - and she's coming with all the trimmings! The former world number one and 2013 Linz winner starts the tournament with her match against Lucia Bronzetti (not before 6.30 pm).
Angelique Kerber
After arriving on Sunday and receiving a warm welcome from tournament director Sandra Reichel, the 2018 Wimbledon winner already had a full schedule on Monday. In addition to a large media round, a student press conference with her coach Torben Beltz was also on the agenda. However, the focus was clearly on preparing for her first round match today. But of course I know that I have to be patient," says Kerber, who won the United Cup with Germany in her first tournament after her comeback. At the Australian Open, she only narrowly lost to former Linz semi-finalist Danielle Collins. Today she will be up against the Italian Lucia Bronzetti and can be sure of great support from the Linz fans - just like eleven years ago!
Camila Giorgi
Another former winner of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz will be doing the honours at 2 pm. Camila Giorgi from Italy was already flying high with a forklift truck at one of her favourite tournaments during the draw on Sunday. From today, the 32-year-old is now hoping for a sporting high, similar to 2018, when she won her second WTA tournament. She previously reached the final for the first time in Linz in 2014 - and this year? She first has to deal with an old acquaintance at the start. Giorgi wants to take revenge on Clara Tauson for her defeat in the round of 16 in Linz last year. Will that work?
Impressive start by Pavlyuchenkova & Boulter
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Katie Boulter are already one step further. Both won the first two main draw matches of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz as a WTA 500 tournament thanks to impressive performances. They dominated above all with a strong serve and only conceded four games each. The direct duel between the two in the round of 16 promises to be a real highlight.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
"I'm really happy with my performance. My game plan was simply to have fun and feel the ball well in the racket. That worked out really well. I feel very comfortable here. Linz is a wonderful city and I still have a lot to discover here over the next few days."
Katie Boulter
Kraus as the clear outsider
If Sinja Kraus were to qualify for the last 16 today, it would probably be the biggest success in the career of the 21-year-old Viennese. Kraus, who is currently ranked 185th in the world, has had time to get used to the atmosphere in the Design Centre over the last few days and will face France's Clara Burel (WTA 52) today at "prime time" (not before 8pm). "I'm lost for words. I'm absolutely delighted to be taking part," said Kraus after finding out that she was the only Austrian in the main draw thanks to a wildcard. "The wildcard is a reward and certainly an incentive for her future career. I'm always happy when we can be a platform for Austrian women's tennis with our tournament," says tournament director Sandra Reichel. Sinja, we are keeping our fingers crossed for you!
She was the only German player to make it through qualifying: Jule Niemeier, the 2022 Wimbledon quarter-finalist, defeated Nuria Parrizas Diaz of Spain by a clear 6:3, 6:1 yesterday. Today (not before 4 p.m.), Niemeier will face Anna Blinkova. In addition to her, Denmark's Clara Tauson, Jodie Burrage from Great Britain, Erika Andreeva, Sara Errani (Italy) and Lucrezia Stefanini (Italy) have also qualified. Jaqueline Cristian from Romania slipped into the field as the "lucky loser". Incidentally, Cristian's tournament week in 2021 also began this way - and it took her all the way to the final...
Kornspitz
Of tradition and craftsmanship
Donna Vekic, Sinja Kraus and Ekaterina Alexandrova had a very special Monday morning. The three tennis pros were able to bake their own delicious Kornspitz at a baking event at Backaldrin - a welcome change from the players' normal daily routine! We wish them all the best: Bon appétit!
Backaldrin will be at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz with various activities throughout the week of the tournament.
About Linz: "We arrived yesterday lunchtime and so far we're all really enjoying it. It's the second time for me and it's just nice to be back in Linz."
...about her comeback:
"It's now my second tournament here after my comeback. I'm glad that I got a wildcard thanks to Sandra, so I can gain match practice. I'm delighted to finally be back on the tour and I'm trying to enjoy everything on and off the court."
...about the tournament week:
"I hope to play good tennis from the first round and get as far as possible. I'm excited to see how the week will go!"

Student press conference
How does a professional player like Angelique Kerber actually eat? Does she have a favourite country and why does she actually play tennis? Children and young people were able to ask these and many other questions yesterday at a very special press conference presented by LINZ AG. "Angie" and her coach Torben Beltz took a lot of time for the youngsters and answered every question with a lot of humour. An unforgettable experience for everyone involved!
