A world-class trio will be in action on "Super Tuesday" at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz 2023: Maria Sakkari, the number one seed, Camila Giorgi, the 2018 Linz winner, and Donna Vekic, quarter-finalist at the Australian Open, will battle it out for a place in the last 16. Jule Niemeier already made it on Monday evening!
While her colleagues enjoyed a cosy evening at the "Women in Black" Players' Party in the Design Center VIP Club, Jule Niemeier and Sofia Kenin (USA) battled it out on centre court to advance to the round of 16. It was not until shortly after 10 p.m. - after more than two hours of play - that Niemeier celebrated! The 23-year-old German number one beat the 2020 Australian Open winner 2:6, 6:3, 6:4.
"I'm very happy with the second and third sets. I wasn't ready at the beginning, but I'm very happy that I managed to find a way into the match," said the winner. And then "Jule" addressed a few words of thanks to the crowd: "It's during the week and the fact that so many people stayed in the arena is not a matter of course and is nice for us players. Thank you for staying!"
Camila Giorgi will be the first of the super trio to start on Tuesday; the Italian will face Romanian Jacqueline Cristian, who surprisingly reached the final of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz in 2021, in the fourth match of the day on Centre Court. Greek against Spanish, Sakkari against Nuria Parrizas Diaz, is the match of the day (not before 6.30 pm). The "Super Tuesday" will end with the match between Donna Vekic from Croatia and Tamara Korpatsch from Germany.
