The Upper Austria Ladies Linz is already a historic tournament. For the first time in ten years, there are two Austrians in the main draw of the country's biggest women's tennis tournament! After Vienna's Sinja Kraus followed Vorarlberg's Julia Grabher into the main competition yesterday, she has earned a break today. Instead, Grabher has her big performance on centre court today!
The match against Anastasia Potapova will certainly be an absolute endurance test for the former top 60 player - and she will certainly need the vociferous support of the tennis-crazy Linz crowd to master it successfully!
On the day before her match, Grabher had to cope with a small media marathon yesterday - just like Ekaterina Alexandrova, Karolina Muchova, Maria Sakkari and the German Eva Lys, who also answered numerous questions from the media representatives.
Since her big coup "Down Under" - she stormed into the last 16 of the Australian Open as a "lucky loser" - 23-year-old Lys has been going by her new nickname "Lucky Lys" and is really looking forward to her match at "one of my favourite tournaments" (Lys' own words) against the experienced qualifier Petra Martic from Croatia. Martic is an absolute expert on Linz - she already reached the final here in Upper Austria in 2023!

Another budding star on the WTA Tour can already be seen in the early afternoon. In the second match after 12 noon, Lulu Sun from New Zealand, the WTA Newcomer of the Year 2024, celebrates her Linz premiere on Centre Court!
Incidentally, last year's surprise Wimbledon quarter-finalist knows her way around the Alps very well. After being born in a small town in New Zealand to a Chinese mother and Croatian father, she first moved with her family to Shanghai and then to Switzerland when she was five. Now she is getting to know Upper Austria for the first time and will be playing against Sara Sorribes Tormo from Spain - and when she is on court, the match can take a little longer. Just take a look and you'll know what we mean...

Dayana Yastremska celebrated the absolute finest hour of her career almost exactly a year ago. She stormed through qualifying to reach the semi-finals at the Australian Open and then immediately made her way to Linz. Last year, she lost to Donna Vekic in the round of 16 at the Design Centre - will she go any further this time? Yastremska is now coming to Upper Austria well rested. This is extremely important for her powerful and athletic game. But beware: Her opponent today, Lucia Bronzetti, not only caused a big surprise recently at the Australian Open against Victoria Azarenka. Last year, she won her opening match against Angelique Kerber in Linz. So Yastremska will definitely be warned. Sounds like the best omens for an exciting night session!
How do tennis players deal with pressure? Does Eva Lys watch trash TV? And how can school and professional sport be combined? These and many other questions were asked by participants at the school press conference on Monday as part of Kids Day. And there was even more on offer! In cooperation with the Upper Austrian Education Directorate, there were school lessons for the pupils on the topic of "women's sport". In addition to a raffle with very special prizes from LINZ AG, the WTA players, and especially Sinja Kraus, could be cheered on from time to time! It was a cool event and a day that will definitely be remembered!
The ÖTV awards for Austria's tennis team of the year took place at the WTA tournament on Monday evening. The U14 national team with Lea Haider-Maurer, Anna Pircher and Kara Fronek was honoured by tournament director Sandra Reichel and ÖTV sports coordinator Marion Maruska. The team was honoured for 2nd place at the European Championships in the Summer Cup as well as for 4th place at the World Championships (in the ITF Junior Team Final). We say: Congratulations and maybe we'll see you again in a few years on the centre court of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz!
Winter is far from over. And with it the best prospects for varied leisure activities, action and exercise on and off the slopes. Cultural fun in cities and in the countryside, relaxation in one of the thermal spas and health hotels, savouring fine regional cuisine. And all with a dash of decelerated cosiness that is so typical of Upper Austria. Skiing, good things from Upper Austria's cuisine and unique events can be found, for example, at the Winter Variety from 6 - 9 February, the hut gourmet tour "Der Kasberg kocht" on 8 March, the gourmet summit on 15 March in Hinterstoder or the nostalgic ski race on 22 March on the Feuerkogel.

With a tailwind to Linz! Katerina Siniakova won the doubles title at the Australian Open together with Taylor Townsend at the weekend - and now she will be playing in Upper Austria's capital for the eighth time in her career. She first competed in the qualifiers in Linz in October 2014 when she was just 18 years old. A lot has happened since then! The Czech has already won five singles titles and no fewer than 28 doubles tournaments on the WTA Tour, making her number one in the doubles world rankings. The Australian Open title was her tenth Grand Slam success.
Nice to have you here, Katerina!
The players of the WTA tournament were delighted to receive a visit from their home ice hockey team on Monday. The Steinbach Black Wings Linz came to the Design Centre Linz with around 25 people in their luggage. Among them were 17 players, including Julian Pusnik, Graham Knott, Andreas Kristler and Logan Roe. As the saying goes, "sport is the bond that unites us". Great that you were here!
Rotary meets Upper Austria Ladies Linz! Rotary guests from Traun experienced an exciting evening of tennis on Monday, including a backstage tour. Rotary is an international network with 1.4 million members and is not only one of the largest, but also one of the oldest organisations of its kind. Thank you for being here, dear Rotary members!
Cool sustainability initiative! The Upper Austrian insurance company covers the cost of 1 m² of seed for every ace that is beaten.
