The 2000 final at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz was one of the best and most spectacular matches in the entire history of the tournament: Venus Williams versus Lindsay Davenport - a duel between two world stars in Upper Austria!
In October 2000, Williams entered the final in Linz not only as the newly crowned Olympic, Wimbledon and US Open champion, but also with an impressive unbeaten streak of 32 matches in a row. However, after a high-class match, she was defeated by her compatriot Lindsay Davenport. For Davenport, it was one of the most important victories ever against her great rival, against whom she had played five finals in 2000 alone and had previously lost in the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open.
Venus Williams created a new dimension of athleticism, power and presence with her game, was the world number one for eleven weeks and won a total of seven Grand Slam singles titles, including five times at Wimbledon, the world's most traditional tennis tournament. Although she failed to win the tournament in Linz, she was able to take home a smart dirndl as a memento of her only appearance on the Danube. The following year, Williams had to cancel her appearance at short notice due to a wrist injury.
